1st Battalion 3rd East Anglian Regiment on patrol, Malaya
British troops were deployed in Malaya between 1948 and 1960 to suppress guerilla activity.

 

 

Berlin Wall, Germany, 1964
The 3rd Battalion was stationed in Berlin from 1964-66, the 2nd Battalion from 1978-81.
This photograph was taken just after four refugees crossed from East to West Berlin in 1964. They were undetected by East German Guards and received assistance by four 3rd Battalion soldiers patrolling the Berlin Wall.

Between 1964 and 1967 the 1st, 3rd and 4th Battalions were deployed in Aden to suppress revolts by Arab nationalists in the mountainous Radfan region and an urban terrorist campaign in the port of Aden.

The 4th Battalion provided internal security support for the Ruler of Bahrain from August 1969 – May 1970.

The Regiment has periodically contributed troops to the United Nations in a peacekeeping role on the island since 1969.

The Regiment had a battalion stationed in Germany as part of the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) almost continuously until the end of the Cold War in 1989.

Northern Ireland has been one of the Regiment’s main commitments since the “Troubles” between Catholic and Protestant communities began in 1969.
