1st Battalion - The Vikings
The 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment are called 'The Vikings', which reflects the influence of the Nordic warriors on the eastern part of the regimental area from which soldiers are recruited. 2nd Battalion - The Poachers
The 2nd Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment are called “The Poachers”, the nickname of one of their predecessors, The Royal Lincolnshire Regiment. It comes from the title of their Regimental March, The Lincolnshire Poacher.
3rd Battalion - Territorial Companies
In 2006 a new territorial battalion, the 3rd Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment, formed from the short-lived East of England Regiment (see ‘Tour the Museum’ and the Family Tree relating to the Territorial Army for detail). The 3rd Battalion’s Headquarters and its Headquarters Company are in Bury St Edmunds with the other companies based in Norwich, Leicester, and Chelmsford. Regimental Association
The Regiment Association and its County branches throughout the region maintains its link with retired and serving members of the Former Regiments and the Royal Anglian Regiment and provides welfare support for those of its members in need. Commonwealth War Graves Commission
The "Debt of Honour Register" is the Commission's database listing the 1.7 million men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died during the two world wars and the 23,000 cemeteries, memorials and other locations worldwide where they are commemorated. The register can also be searched for details of the 67,000 Commonwealth civilians who died as a result of enemy action in the Second World War. www.cwgc.org
Army Personnel Centre
All service papers for soldiers who served after 1920 are held at the Army Personnel Centre, Historic Disclosures, Mailpoint 400, Kentigern House, 65 Brown Street, Glasgow G2 8EX. A fee is charged (about £25) for each search, even if no material is discovered. A special form has to be completed prior to the search. It is essential that you quote the Regiment and personal number of the soldier concerned. (Note: this information is usually engraved on the medals of soldiers). There is a long backlog of enquries at present so it may take some weeks to receive a reply. |
